Description
This female great curassow was photographed in the Arenal Volcano area of Costa Rica, Central America. This is the rufous morph of this neotropical pheasant-like bird. It has an unusual curly black and white crest and head, curved beak, and black and chestnut colored feathers. The iris of her eye is reddish-brown. Curassows forage on the forest floor for fallen fruit, seeds, or berries as well as insects. Deforestation is a great threat to the curassow.
