Description
Marguerite Bourgeoys was the first teacher of Ville Marie, now known as Montreal. She taught the settlers of New France and established its first school. Marguerite Bourgeoys was a Catholic nun who established the Congrégation de Notre-Dame, the first uncloistered religious community of women in North America. She believed in teaching practical skills and serving the needs of the people in her community. The order continues her legacy of social justice today. 2020 will be the 400th anniversary celebration of her life. She was canonized in 1982, making her the first female saint of Canada. This hero of the faith was a living example of Galatians 5:13b "...serve one another humbly in love." This photograph of the Marguerite Bourgeoys chapel was taken in the Notre Dame Basilica of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
