Description
The Mount Royal Cross is a monument on top of Mount Royal in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is an iconic landmark visited by tourists from all over the world.
The original cross was erected by Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve on January 6, 1643, in gratitude for his prayers being answered to spare the French colony of Ville Marie (now Montreal) from a disastrous flood.
That cross was replaced with an illuminated cross installed in 1924 as a gift from the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste.The 26 ton steel structure has since been renovated and is now lit by LED light bulbs at night, allowing it to be seen as far as 80 km away.
